Darrell Joshua Lee on Leading with Purpose in Aviation and Beyond
Darrell Joshua Lee, a Bachelor of Applied Science (Aviation Management) student at Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-RMIT University, has grown into a purpose-driven leader committed to helping others thrive. As President of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Global Education-RMIT Student Council and a recipient of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Award, supported by the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Impact Fund, he has developed valuable leadership and future-ready skills while pursuing his aspiration of becoming a pilot and, one day, a flight instructor who inspires the next generation.
There was a time when Darrell Joshua Lee did not see himself as a high-performing student. Today, as a recipient of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Award and President of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-RMIT Student Council, he sees growth not as a destination but as a continuous journey of learning, leadership, and service.
Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Science (Aviation Management) at Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-RMIT University, Darrell has spent his university years seeking opportunities to support those around him. Whether through student leadership, mentoring fellow students, or pursuing his ambition of becoming a pilot, he believes meaningful growth comes from being instrumental in helping others realise their potential.
“I’ve always enjoyed connecting with people and creating a positive environment where everyone feels included,” he shares.
Learning to Lead Through Service
Darrell's journey in student leadership began with the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-RMIT Student Council, where he served as Director of Student Events before being entrusted with the role of President. One of the experiences he is most proud of was leading the planning and execution of the Freshman Orientation Camp in 2025.
The initiative brought together a large team of student leaders to create an environment where new students could feel welcomed and connected to the university community.
"What makes this experience especially meaningful is knowing the impact it had on students. Many freshmen entered university feeling uncertain or intimidated by the new environment, and to witness them make new friends, gain confidence, and find a sense of belonging reminded me why student leadership matters," he says.
For Darrell, those experiences also reinforced an important lesson: meaningful leadership is never achieved alone. Working alongside the Student Events team, he helped organise a range of initiatives, including the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-RMIT Carnival Bazaar: Finder's Fiesta, which was recognised with the Gold Standard for Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Outstanding Events. While proud of the achievement, he is quick to credit the people behind its success.
"I'm truly grateful to the team, as the events we organised would not have been successful without their hard work, commitment, and support. Receiving the Gold Standard for Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Outstanding Events is something I am very proud of and grateful to have achieved together with the team."
This collaborative mindset also shaped how Darrell approached leadership. Rather than seeing it as having all the answers, he viewed it as creating opportunities for others to succeed.
As a senior member and later President of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-RMIT Student Council, he worked closely with new councillors stepping into leadership roles for the first time. He recalls one particular councillor who was nervous about leading a major event because they lacked confidence and experience. Instead of simply giving instructions, Darrell shared his own experiences, guided them through the planning process, and checked in regularly throughout the event preparations. By the end of the event, the councillor had successfully led the team and grown in confidence.
"Seeing that growth was incredibly rewarding," he says. "It reinforced my belief that leadership is not about being the most capable person in the room, but about helping others realise their own potential."
Charting a Path in Aviation
Beyond campus, Darrell’s aspirations are firmly set in the skies. His interest in aviation began at a young age with visits to airshows, where watching aircraft take off and land sparked a fascination with how people and places could be connected across continents. Over time, that fascination evolved into a deeper appreciation for the professionalism, discipline, and responsibility required in aviation.“For me, it’s really about the level of responsibility and discipline that comes with being a pilot. It’s not just a job; it’s something that requires you to consistently hold yourself to high standards,” he explains.
In the long term, Darrell hopes to become a flight instructor. Inspired by mentors and instructors who have guided him along the way, he hopes to share his passion and help develop the next generation of pilots. “Being able to share the knowledge, build confidence in others, and contribute to aviation safety would be a meaningful way for me to give back to the industry,” he says. The leadership experiences he gained at Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø have also equipped him with valuable qualities that will serve him well in aviation, including communication, adaptability, accountability, and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
A Recognition of Progress
Receiving the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Award, a programme under the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Impact Fund, marks an important milestone in Darrell’s journey. The award recognises students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and meaningful contributions to the community, while the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Impact Fund creates pathways and enhances the employability of learners.For Darrell, the recognition represents how far he has come. “Honestly, it means a lot more to me than just an award. I wasn’t always someone who did well academically. In the past, I struggled quite a bit and didn’t see myself as a high performer.”
Receiving the award has given him an opportunity to reflect on the effort he has invested in both his studies and leadership responsibilities. “To be at the point where I’m receiving the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Award feels incredibly meaningful. It shows me that the effort I’ve been putting in over the past few semesters, both academically and in leadership, has actually made a difference.”
Rather than seeing the award as an endpoint, Darrell views it as motivation to continue growing and giving back. As he continues his journey, he carries with him a simple belief: leadership is not about standing above others, but about creating an environment for others to thrive. Darrell hopes to continue making a positive impact, both on the ground and, one day, in the skies.
