How Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø’s Study Abroad Award Shaped Wee Jie Qi’s Global Perspective and Career Readiness

Wee Jie Qi’s study abroad journey at the University of Stirling became a “magical” chapter of growth and discovery. With support from the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Study Abroad Award, a programme under the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Impact Fund, she immersed herself in a new academic and cultural environment, formed meaningful cross-cultural connections, and experienced a different pace of life with greater peace of mind. More than an overseas exchange, the experience broadened her worldview and reshaped how she sees the world beyond the classroom.

Wee Jie Qi’s study abroad journey at the University of Stirling became a “magical†chapter of growth and discovery.

For Wee Jie Qi, a Year 3 student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Digital Media at the University of Stirling at Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø, the decision to study abroad was not just about experiencing a different country; it was about discovering how her creative interests could grow within a broader global and cultural context.

Her academic journey began with a strong interest in film and production. “My initial interest was in film and production, which I pursued through my relevant diploma, as I have always been drawn to visual storytelling and creative work.” Yet Jie Qi was keenly aware that the creative industry is fast-changing and competitive. Rather than narrowing her focus, she sought a programme that would allow her to stay adaptable. “The Digital Media programme felt like a natural progression, as it complements my background in film while expanding my understanding of digital content, platforms, and audiences.”

At Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø, the programme’s flexibility became a defining strength, enabling her to remain grounded in creativity while developing a deeper understanding of the intersection between media, technology, and audiences, always with an eye on industry relevance and future-ready skills.

Making the Leap Abroad

From the start of her studies, Jie Qi knew she wanted to experience university life overseas. “I had the intention of going on exchange, as I felt it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience university life overseas.” Hearing stories from seniors who had gone before her only strengthened that resolve, reinforcing the transformative power of an overseas experience, both academically and personally.

However, like many students, practical considerations came into play. The costs associated with studying abroad were significant, and financial planning was a key concern. This was what motivated her to apply for the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Study Abroad Award. “The award would help make the experience more financially manageable and reduce the burden on my family,” she shared, adding that knowing there was institutional support gave her greater confidence to pursue the opportunity fully.

“My first reaction when I found out I had been awarded the Study Abroad Award was definitely joy, but most importantly, I felt a strong sense of gratitude and relief!” Although she had already planned and saved for the exchange, the award made a meaningful difference. “Knowing that I had financial support made the experience feel much less stressful, especially considering my family background.” With that reassurance, she stepped into her exchange experience with a different mindset, one less defined by financial constraints and more by curiosity.

Living, Learning, and Connecting Abroad

Jie Qi spent approximately four months overseas at the University of Stirling, adapting to a new academic structure and cultural rhythm. Initially, the differences were striking. “Unlike in Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø-UOS, where we usually focus on one module at a time, all my modules ran concurrently, with classes scheduled in shorter blocks.” While challenging at first, this structure also created space for exploration and participation beyond the classroom.

The campus environment played a significant role in her adjustment. “The school had a much more vibrant campus life compared to Singapore, with frequent and diverse events,” she said. Joining activities, spending time with friends, and exploring the campus helped her feel connected and grounded in her new environment. She became more confident in articulating her ideas and contributing to discussions, strengthening her ability to communicate effectively across cultures.

Among many memorable experiences, one stood out vividly. “I had the unexpected and unforgettable experience of catching the Northern Lights at school.” Yet for Jie Qi, the most meaningful moments were not defined solely by spectacle. “The most meaningful and memorable part of my time abroad was the connections I formed with people from different backgrounds.” Through collaborating with classmates from around the world, she developed a global mindset and the ability to navigate diverse perspectives.

“These friendships made everyday life overseas feel meaningful and left the strongest impression on me.â€

A free Japanese language class offered by the university became a surprising highlight. Through it, she formed close friendships with both local and international students. “These friendships made everyday life overseas feel meaningful and left the strongest impression on me.”

A Broader Worldview, A Clearer Self

Her semester abroad not only enriched her academic journey, but also equipped her with the confidence, adaptability and global perspective needed to thrive in an increasingly international and AI-driven workforce. “The experience helped me gain a deeper understanding of how culture shapes daily life and perspectives.” Observing Europe’s slower pace of life prompted reflection, especially in contrast to Singapore’s efficiency-driven environment.

Academically and professionally, the exchange also offered clarity. “Studying abroad gave me valuable insight into the kind of environment where I thrive.” While she realised she feels more comfortable in an Asian context, the experience reinforced the importance of adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and openness in a globalised world.

When asked to sum up her study abroad experience in one word, she said, “I would say ‘magical’ because it felt like a once-in-a-lifetime journey full of unexpected discoveries and memorable moments.” Living and studying abroad strengthened her independence and resilience, as she learned to navigate new systems, manage daily responsibilities, and adapt quickly to unfamiliar situations. Through the Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Study Abroad Award, Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø enabled Jie Qi to experience not just a different country but a deeper understanding of herself and the world around her, turning a long-held aspiration into a truly magical chapter of growth.
