The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science degree is a flagship course of Cardiff University’s School of Computer Science and Informatics. The programme is informed by industry needs and gives students a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of Computer Science, as well as professional skills in problem-solving and project work.

Curriculum

Structure

  • Programme is mainly delivered face-to-face, in block teaching basis where lectures are conducted by Cardiff University teaching faculty, complemented by tutorials or lab work supported by local practitioners or academics.
  • Average teacher-student ratio: 1:100
  • Weekly schedule: Between Monday and Friday at three or six hours per session. Saturday classes may occasionally be scheduled if required.
  • Class timing: 8.30am / 12.00pm / 3.30pm, held on Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø campus unless otherwise stated
  • Minimum class size to commence: 30 students
  • If the class fails to commence due to low take-up rate, applicants will be informed within one month before programme commencement with the refund of application fee.

Assessment & Attendance

  • There will be varied assessments which may include: 
    • Assignments 
    • Presentations 
    • Online Discussions 
    • Written Examinations
    • Projects 
  • Attendance requirement:
    • Local students – 75%
    • International students – 90%

Requirements to Graduate

  • To attain the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science, students must complete all the requirements of the programme in strict compliance with the schedules and timelines defined for the cohort in which the student is enrolled or deferred. 
  • The awarded degree and degree certificate, is the same as that awarded in the UK, i.e. Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science. The word "Top-up" will not be reflected.

  • Object Orientation, Algorithms and Data Structures (10 credits)
  • Data Processing and Visualisation (10 credits)
  • Informatics (10 credits)
  • Introduction to the Theory of Computation (10 credits)

Compulsory Modules:
  • Emerging Technologies (20 credits)
  • One Semester Individual Project^ (40 credits)
  • Artificial Intelligence (20 credits) 

Optional Modules:
  • Security (10 credits)
  • Forensics (10 credits) 
  • Large-Scale Databases (20 credits)
  • Knowledge Management (20 credits) 
  • Design Thinking and Prototyping for User Experience (20 credits)
  • Introduction to Computational Robotics (20 credits)
  • Managing Change (20 credits)

For BSc (Hons) in Computer Science, students are required to choose a combination of optional modules in order to attain the 120 credits required for Year 3.

  • *Taught and supervised by local lecturers.
  • ^Includes online sessions with assigned supervisor from Cardiff faculty.

  • Students are required to own a laptop equipped with at least Microsoft Windows 10 or Apple MacOS Catalina (10.15) and 8GB RAM (recommended).

Admission Criteria

Accepted Entry Qualifications

  • Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Diploma in Information Technology; or 
  • Relevant Information Technology diplomas from local polytechnics 

All other qualifications shall be considered on a case-by-case basis and may be subject to interview. 

English Language Requirements

  • Minimum C6 pass in English as First Language at GCE 'O' Level; or 
  • IELTS score of 6.5 overall with minimum of 5.5 in each subskill; or 
  • TOEFL score of 90 overall with a minimum of 17 for writing, 17 for listening, 18 for reading, and 20 for speaking; or 
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): At least 69 overall with a minimum of 59 in all communicative skills; or 
  • Successful completion of Part 2 of Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø Pre-Sessional English course (PSEC); or 
  • Successful completion of a recognised approved Diploma, where the language of instruction was English; or 
  • Equivalent

Student Development Fee

Applicable to all students embarking on a full-time Diploma or Undergraduate programme at Â鶹ÊÓƵ¹ÙÍø. This fee goes towards activities that will help in students’ personal growth and equip them with functional skills that enhance their employability.

A one-time fee payable by new full-time international students. This fee covers pre-arrival and arrival support, including activities to enhance the international student learning experience.

Payable for each application form that is submitted. Fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. The fee will be refunded fully only if the intake does not commence. Unpaid applications will not be processed.
